THE AUTHOR PRESENTS FACTORS WHICH ACCOUNT FOR MUCH OF THE RESISTANCE TO TEAM POLICING AND SUGGESTS THAT EACH OF THEM BE ANTICIPATED AND ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE PROCESS OF ADAPTING AND IMPLEMENTING TEAM POLICING PROGRAMS.
Abstract
OFFICERS' MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE MOTIVATIONS FOR INSTITUTING OF TEAM POLICING IS SEEN AS ONE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. RELUCTANCE OF OFFICERS TO ASSUME OR SHARE LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES IS ANOTHER. OFFICERS MAY INITIALLY DOUBT THEIR COMPETENCE IN THEIR NEW ROLES, OR THEY MAY EXPERIENCE ROLE CONFLICT. IT IS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT COMMUNITIES IN THE MIDST OF SOCIAL UPHEAVAL AND TURMOIL MAY NOT BE PROPER SETTINGS FOR POLICE ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS THAT PERSONS EXPERIENCED IN BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE PARTICIPATE IN THE INITIATION OF TEAM POLICING PROGRAMS.
