THE PROFESSIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL NECESSITY OF ADVANCED POLICE TRAINING AND THE ATTITUDES OF WEST GERMAN OFFICERS TOWARDS IT ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
THE CONSTANT SOCIOLOGICAL, SCIENTIFIC, PSYCHOLOGICAL, TECHNICAL, AND LEGAL CHANGES IN TODAY'S FAST-PACED SOCIETY MAKE CONTINUOUS INFORMATION UPDATE AND ADVANCED TRAINING A PROFESSIONAL NECESSITY. ACCORDING TO PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTS, ADVANCED TRAINING IS ALSO A PSYCHOLOGICAL NECESSITY SINCE NUMEROUS NEUROSES AND PSYCHOSES ARE ROOTED IN THE INDIVIDUAL'S INABILITY TO COPE WITH MODERN PROFESSIONAL COMPLEXITIES AND THE DEMANDS OF AN ACHIEVEMENT-ORIENTED SOCIETY. POLICE ADMINISTRATORS AND UNION LEADERS AGREE THAT OFFICER DEMAND FOR ADVANCED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES IS OVERWHELMING--PARTICULARLY SINCE THE INITIAL SCHOOLING WITH ITS PRESSURES, ITS EMPHASIS ON GRADES, AND THE CONSTANT THREAT OF FAILING IS OFTEN EXPERIENCED AS STRESSFUL AND, THEREFORE, IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE LEARNING PROCESS. THE ORGANIZERS OF ADVANCED COURSES SHOULD TRY TO AVOID THE PITFALLS OF CONVENTIONAL PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS: A WEST GERMAN RESEARCH PROJECT RECENTLY REVEALED THAT 20 PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS FELT TENSE, WERE UNABLE TO ASSIMILATE THE COPIOUS AND TEDIOUS MATERIAL, AND WERE FEARFUL OF EXAMS. THE STUDENTS PLEADED FOR AN EXTENSIVE ANALYSIS OF THEIR LEARNING PROGRESS WITHOUT THE PRESSURE OF CONSTANT GRADING. ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE STUDENTS' SUGGESTIONS ARE IMPRACTICABLE, POLICE ACADEMIES SHOULD STRIVE TO ADOPT THE MOST MODERN AND SUCCESSFUL TEACHING METHODS. --IN GERMAN. (SAJ)
