The Citizens Committee for New York City is an example of a citywide organization that successfully helps organize, support, and maintain neighborhood groups and is flexible enough to help tailor services to meet particular needs.
Abstract
This nonprofit organization was founded in 1975 by the late Senator Jacob Javits to help offset the impact of the city's fiscal crisis that resulted in massive layoffs of vital city service workers. The Citizens Committee focused on creating hundreds of new volunteer block and neighborhood associations and strengthening existing ones. The committee now operates many programs and activities that offer free self-help literature, telephone information and referrals, training, technical assistance, and small cash grants and awards to more than 7,000 grassroots volunteer groups. The committee has learned that no single type of support and assistance is sufficient by itself. Instead, it combines a variety of components into a coordinated approach that creates a citywide climate of support and encouragement for volunteer neighborhood organizations. Photographs and lists of specific activities of the organization.
