DESCRIPTION OF A NURSING SCHOOL PROGRAM IN WHICH STUDENTS IN MENTAL HEALTH AND COMMUNITY HEALTH PARTICIPATE IN THE LOCAL JUVENILE COURT DETENTION FACILITY AS THEIR LABORATORY EXPERIENCE.
Abstract
THIS PROGRAM WAS INITIATED IN AUGUST 1973, WHEN AN INVITATION FOR STUDENT PLACEMENT IN THE JUVENILE COURT FACILITIES WAS EXTENDED BY THE DIRECTOR OF CHILD CARE SERVICES. STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SUCH ACTIVITIES AS ATTENDING COURT HEARINGS, VISITING PSYCHIATRIC INPATIENT UNITS, ATTENDING SEMINARS, AND EVALUATING POTENTIAL TEEN-AGE ALCOHOLICS. THE STUDENTS' CLIENTS INCLUDE JUVENILE OFFENDERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. SEVERAL PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN OPERATING THE PROGRAM ARE NOTED. THESE INCLUDE STAFF CONFLICTS, LACK OF TRUE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT, AND LIMITED UTILIZATION OF STUDENTS. THESE PROBLEMS WERE OVERCOME, AND IT IS NOTED THAT THE PROGRAM HAS PROVIDED SEVERAL BENEFITS. THESE INCLUDE REDUCTION OF PROBATION OFFICERS' WORKLOADS, ALCOHOLISM SCREENING FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS, PROVISION OF THERAPEUTIC GROUP ACTIVITIES, AND PROVISION OF A HEALTH RESOURCE . NOTING THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM, THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS A NUMBER OF AREAS IN WHICH THIS PROGRAM MAY BE EXPANDED....DMC
