In a nationwide survey, 28 State probation departments reported they expect to increase their staff within the next few years; 8 departments hoped to add officers with the approval of their legislatures, and 7 expected to stay at the same level. Only Wyoming reported anticipated budget and staffing cuts.
Abstract
The average entry level salary was over $18,000, with career advancement potential. Eligibility requirements for most probation officers included a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; some jurisdictions required the equivalent of a master's degree, and others required no college, but relevant experience. Education and experience criteria focused on sociology, education, psychology, correctional counseling, criminal justice, or political science. 1 table
