Abstract
This 2007-2008 Annual Report of the New South Wales Ombudsman presents information to the Parliament of New South Wales (NSW) on the work of the Ombudsman's office for the period July 1, 2007, though June 30, 2008. The report provides information on the work of the Ombudsman's office as required under the Police Act of 1990. The information is presented in 12 chapters that cover the following areas: community engagement, inquiries, children and young people, policing, juvenile justice, corrections, department and authorities, local government, freedom of information, protected disclosures, and covert operations. Some of the work undertaken by the Ombudsman's office included examining the way people with a mental illness access and maintain social housing, the processes around suspensions in public schools, and the level of support provided to Aboriginal children in foster care. The office also examined changes in legislation and the effect that these changes have on defendants and law enforcement investigations. For the year under review, the office received 34,021 complaints and notifications from a variety of people, of which 9.320 were formal complaints. The final section of the report contains information on the financial operations of the office. Tables, figures, and appendixes
