In 1992, 5.6 million offenses were recorded by police in England and Wales; this represents a 6-percent increase, the smallest in the past 3 years (the increase in 1991 was 16 percent).
Abstract
Ninety-four percent of the crimes were property offenses and 5 percent were violent crimes; violent crime rose by 7 percent (a 6-percent rise in personal violence and a 17-percent rise in robberies). Vehicle crimes were up 3 percent over the previous year, while the increase in 1991 was 18 percent. Crime rates fell in the City of London and Northumbria, but rose in all other police force areas, albeit by smaller amounts than the previous year in most cases. The number of offenses cleared fell by 6 percent with primary clear-ups (charges, summons, or cautions) falling by 2 percent; 66 percent of violent crimes were cleared. 12 tables, 9 figures, and 6 notes
