This issue of the Home Office Statistical Bulletin contains a statistical review of notifiable offenses in England and Wales from July 1992 to June 1993.
Abstract
Sections focus on total crime, violent crimes, property crimes, notifiable offenses by area, and trends. Some of the main points were as follows: During the period, there were 5.7 notifiable offenses, for an annual increase of 4 percent; this is significantly lower than the 11-percent increase from the preceding 12-month period. Property crimes accounted for 94 percent of the total; violent crimes, 5 percent. Thefts accounted for half of all offenses; the 1- percent increase was the smallest in four years. Overall violent crimes increased by 4 percent; crimes against the person increased by 2 percent, robberies increased by 14 percent, and sexual offenses decreased for the first time since 1984, by 0.1 percent. Recorded crimes fell in eight police force areas, most notably in Merseyside and Northumbria. Increases averaged 1 percent in metropolitan areas, and 6 percent in nonmetropolitan areas. 5 tables, 8 figures, and 6 endnotes
