This article examines a new kind of criminal--the tractor thief.
Abstract
At least one and perhaps as many as five tractor theft rings with an affinity for John Deere models have been active for the past four years in the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition, police are investigating similar thefts in several Midwestern States. This article examines the types of equipment stolen, the criminals' methods of operation, and speculates on the types of persons who may be involved. The author also discusses the effectiveness or lack of effectiveness of several antitheft procedures.
