A TOTAL OF 3,092,057 CASE FILINGS AND DISPOSITIONS WERE REPORTED TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF THE COURTS IN NORTH CAROLINA IN 1978. DATA ARE PROVIDED FOR THESE CASES IN THIS 1978 ANNUAL REPORT.
Abstract
DURING 1978 A TOTAL OF 1,564,877 CASES OF ALL TYPES WERE REPORTED FILED IN NORTH CAROLINA'S DISTRICT AND SUPERIOR COURTS. BY CATEGORY, THE NUMBERS FILED RANGED FROM 11,541 CIVIL CASES IN THE SUPERIOR COURTS TO 815,857 CRIMINAL CASES (TRAFFIC OFFENSES) IN THE STATE'S DISTRICT COURTS. DURING THE SAME YEAR, A TOTAL OF 1,527,180 CIVIL AND CRIMINAL CASES WERE DISPOSED OF IN THE STATE'S DISTRICT AND SUPERIOR COURTS. FOR RECORDKEEPING AND STATISTICAL REPORTING PURPOSES THERE ARE FIVE MAJOR CASE CATEGORIES AT BOTH THE SUPERIOR COURT AND DISTRICT LEVELS. IN THE SUPERIOR COURT THERE ARE CIVIL CASES, ESTATE CASES, SPECIAL PROCEEDINGS, AND CRIMINAL CASES (INCLUDING BOTH FELONIES AND MISDEMEANORS APPEALED). IN THE DISTRICT COURT, THERE ARE CIVIL CASES, INCLUDING GENERAL, DOMESTIC RELATIONS, AND SMALL CLAIMS; AND CRIMINAL CASES, INCLUDING MOTOR VEHICLE AND OTHER OFFENSES. THE ANNUAL REPORT PROVIDES DETAILED DATA ON ALL THESE CATEGORIES PLUS ORGANIZATIONAL, ADMINISTRATIVE, FISCAL, AND DIRECTORY INFORMATION. GRAPHS ILLUSTRATE CASEFLOW TRENDS FOR THE SUPERIOR AND DISTRICT COURT DIVISIONS FROM 1974 TO 1978 AND FOR 1978 CASEFLOW AND ADMINISTRATIVE DATA. FINALLY, DIRECTORIES LIST MEMBERS OF THE JUDICIAL COUNCIL, THE JUDICIAL STANDARDS COMMISSION, THE JUDICIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE, TRIAL JUDGES OF THE GENERAL COURT OF JUSTICE; DISTRICT ATTORNEYS AND ASSISTANTS; PUBLIC DEFENDERS AND ASSISTANTS; SPECIAL COUNSEL AT MENTAL HOSPITALS; AND CLERKS OF THE SUPERIOR COURT.
