Abstract
A JOINT PROJECT OF THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION AND THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, THIS CONFERENCE REPORT COVERS WORKSHOP DISCUSSIONS OF NONLETHAL WEAPONS, THEIR NEED, LIMITATIONS, TYPES, THE PROBLEMS OF THEIR USE AND CONTROL, AND THE OBJECTIONS TO NONLETHAL WEAPONS. CONCLUSIONS ARE SUMMARIZED AND RESEARCH PRIORITIES ARE SUPPORTED BY RECOMMENDATIONS. APPENDICES PRESENT CHARACTERISTICS OF NONLETHAL WEAPONS, THE COMMENTS OF INDEPENDENT REVIEWERS, CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS, AND A REFERENCE BIBLIOGRAPHY.
