INTERIM REPORT ON A TWO-YEAR INTENSIVE PROBATION/PAROLE SUPERVISION EXPERIMENT CONDUCTED IN THE SUNDSVALL PROBATION OFFICER'S DISTRICT.
Abstract
VIEWED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INCARCERATION, THE PROGRAM TREBLED THE NORMAL DISTRICT STAFF AND ADDED A CLINIC FOR SOCIAL MEDICINE AS WELL AS A HOTEL AND A HALFWAY HOUSE. THE PROGRAM ALSO UTILIZES LAYMAN SUPERVISORS WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE CLIENTS' HOME ENVIRONMENTS AND ENGAGES THE FULL-TIME EFFORTS OF A LABOR EXCHANGE OFFICER FOR SOLVING CLIENTS' EMPLOYMENT PROBLEMS. THE PROGRAM IS DISCUSSED AS PART OF A MOVE TO LIMIT PRISON SENTENCING TO A FEW SPECIFIC OFFENSES WHILE EXPANDING LONG TERM, COMMUNITY-BASED NON-INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT. FINAL RESULTS OF THE CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT ARE EXPECTED TO BE PUBLISHED IN 1978-79.
