A THREE-YEAR LONGITUDINAL ANALYSIS OF PAROLEES RELEASED IN 1971 IS PRESENTED. THE TABLE HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE ONLY THOSE SUBJECTS REPORTED FOR EACH OF THE THREE YEARS.
Abstract
THE SUMMARY TABLE FOR MALES SHOWS A 6 TO 8 PERCENT DECREASE BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND YEAR IN THOSE CONTINUING ON PAROLE; HOWEVER, THERE WAS ONLY A 1 TO 2 PERCENT DROP BETWEEN THE SECOND AND THIRD YEAR. THE PROPORTION OF ABSCONDERS REMAINED STABLE FOR ALL THREE YEARS. TECHNICAL VIOLATIONS INCREASED 4 PERCENT BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND YEAR AND ONLY 1 TO 2 PERCENT BETWEEN THE SECOND AND THIRD YEAR. PAROLEES RECOMMITTED TO PRISON WITH NEW MAJOR CONVICTIONS INCREASED 3 TO 4 PERCENT OVER THE THREE YEAR PERIOD IN FIVE OF THE OUTCOME GROUPS. PAROLEES WITH PRIOR DRUG ABUSE EVIDENCED A 5 PERCENT GAIN OVER THE SAME PERIOD. THE SUMMARY TABLE FOR FEMALES SHOWS THE LARGEST CHANGE OCCURRING BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND YEARS, WITH 79 PERCENT CONTINUING ON PAROLE AFTER ONE YEAR, 74 PERCENT AFTER TWO YEARS, AND 72 PERCENT THROUGH THE THIRD YEAR. WOMEN RETURNED TO PRISON AS TECHNICAL VIOLATERS INCREASED OVER THE THREE-YEAR PERIOD FROM 10 PERCENT TO 14 PERCENT TO 15 PERCENT. FEMALES RECOMMITTED TO PRISON WITH NEW MAJOR CONVICTIONS INCREASED FROM 2 PERCENT IN THE FIRST YEAR TO 5 PERCENT THROUGH THE THIRD YEAR. THE PROPORTION OF ABSCONDERS REMAINED STABLE...RCB
