The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Information Center Quarterly Summary is a compilation of information received from the directors of corrections in all 50 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This quarter's survey provides information on the number of State prisoners being held in local jails while awaiting transfer to a State facility.
Abstract
Data was gathered on June 30, 1988 on the numbers of prisoners awaiting transfer which ranged from 0 in some States to more than 5,500 in Texas. Data on per diem rates were also requested; highlights are provided. Five States are involved in litigation to reduce the number of State offenders housed in local jails. The major stipulations in each of these States are described briefly. A table summarizing the States' responses in each of these areas is presented. Also included is information on capacity changes, litigation, legislation, commissioner changes, and AIDS information. 3 tables and 17 notes
