This monograph provides an overview of research, law, theory, and personal experience related to major issues in correctional education for juveniles.
Abstract
Covering juvenile justice law, processes, and terminology, it considers trends in juvenile justice andthe impact of local, State, and Federal legislation on services for adjudicated youth. Also examined are theories on the causes of crime, the psychology of juvenile delinquency, and the characteristics of adjudicated youth. It reviews the history of correctional education, Federal and State standards and laws, and the special educational needs of adjudicated youth. Finally, issues in curriculum planning and design are considered; educational needs in literacy, arithmetic, language, and social and daily living skills are outlined. The correctional education program at the Maine Youth Center is described, and items for a proposed seminar are appended. 55 references.
