THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES CONTENT DIFFERENCES IN NEWSPAPER STORIES FOR A SAMPLE OF CRIME ACCOUNTS PUBLISHED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS BETWEEN AUGUST AND OCTOBER 1970.
Abstract
THIRTY-SEVEN COMPARABLE ITEMS WERE ANALYZED BY ENUMERATING EVERY DISCRETE INFORMATIONAL BIT CONTAINED IN THE ARTICLES DEALING WITH THE EVENT, THE OFFENDER, AND THE DECISIONS MADE BY AUTHORITIES IN THE CASE. AN EXAMINATION OF THE DATA REVEALS THAT THE TIMES DEVOTES GREATER VOLUME TO COVERAGE BUT FINDS NO OTHER DIFFERENCES.
