The police in Newcastle upon Tyne in Northumbria, England serve a major center of commerce, retail, and leisure activities and change their priorities and activities according to the time of day and week.
Abstract
Traffic congestion during weekday rush hours in a priority, while high-profile uniformed policing has proved to be a crucial factor in providing an acceptable environment for residents and visitors to the city center. The incidence of violence is a major concern, with 361 assaults and woundings recorded during 1988. Most were committed by young men on other young men and were connected with excessive drinking. During the year 265 police officers were assaulted, 145 by people known to have consumed alcohol. The extension of residential accommodations in previously commercial areas has been accompanied by police involvement in planning for crime prevention and community development. Neighborhood Watch programs continue to be popular. Total crime as well as robberies and car thefts have declined in the city. In addition, efforts insure cooperation with other agencies and good relationships with ethnic communities. Photographs.
