The New York State Police (NYSP) uses a wide variety of traditional and innovative law enforcement strategies to accomplish its mission and is one of the largest full- service police departments in the United States with an authorized fill level of 4,037 sworn positions.
Abstract
The NYSP provides essential police services statewide, enforces traffic laws, has specialized drug law enforcement units, provides technical and support services to local police departments and other criminal justice agencies, uses advanced technology in criminal investigations, and attempts to prevent organized crime. As of March 1994, the actual sworn strength of the NYSP was 3,918, including 2,340 State troopers and 720 investigators; actual civilian strength was 695. The Division of State Police is organized into two principal branches, the Uniform Force and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The NYSP has 507 posts patrolled by uniform troopers. Administratively, the NYSP is organized into 11 troops and a division headquarters. Accomplishments and programs of the NYSP are reviewed as they pertain to serial crime investigations, drug programs, violent crime, highway safety, communications and information technology, and Native American policing. Appendixes contain tables of NYSP organization, a troop map, and a headquarters list.
