In addition to providing statistics on crime and traffic accidents, this 1980 annual report of the New York State Police discusses the activities of the uniform patrol, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the scientific laboratory, and the Canine Corps.
Abstract
Notable traffic incidents and trooper activity in this area are described, along with trooper onduty deaths, trooper involvement in the Winter Olympics, and drug investigations. Activities of the aviation division and trooper scuba divers are also discussed. Personnel developments, training, and improvements in recordkeeping and information systems are considered as well. During 1980, State Police arrests increased 9.6 percent to 723,737, up from the 660,162 recorded in 1979. The total number of offenses known increased 9.1 percent, from 772,758 to 843,154. Traffic arrests increased from 613,473 in 1979 to 674,945 in 1980. Fatal accidents investigated by troppers rose from 477 to 495. Seven troppers were killed while onduty, and the State appropriated $600,000 for soft body armor for all troopers. A hospital-to-hospital airlift program was initiated using the Division Aviation Unit. At year's end, preparation was underway for the first recruit class to come under Federal hiring guidelines. A class of 185 is scheduled to begin training in February 1981. Having outgrown the existing computer system, plans were initiated at year's end to convert to a new system with greater capabilities and speed. Efforts to improve investigative and prosecutive steps in child abuse cases were begun with an instructor development program. A crime prevention program oriented toward residents, businesses, and community groups increased its activities, and there are plans to expand the program in coming years.
