Abstract
One figure shows the percentage of change in arrests and indictments for January through March 1992 compared with the same 1991 period. Another table compares adult arrests by region for the same two quarters. Annual trends in adult arrests are distinguished by felony and misdemeanor arrests for 1980-91. First quarter 1992 arrests and indictments are presented by county as well. Other tables present first quarter 1992 felony indictments by region compared to the first quarter of 1991, and annual trends in felony indictments are shown for 1980-91. The data indicate that approximately the same number of adult arrests occurred during the first quarter of 1992 as during the first quarter of 1991. A slight increase in felony arrests was offset by a slight decrease in misdemeanor arrests. Arrests for violent felony offenses grew significantly, particularly in the counties outside New York City. Arrests for serious drug offenses dropped, and less serious misdemeanor drug arrests rose after several years of decline. The number of felony indictments (including superior court informations) rose a modest 1 percent when preliminary first quarter 1992 data are compared with preliminary data from first quarter 1991. Violent felony indictments grew significantly during the first 3 months of 1992, and felony drug indictments continued to decline.
