Abstract
Statistics indicate that in 1986 alone, 41,858 individuals were sentenced to probation, compared to 32,106 in 1981. Throughout the period most of the probationers were male. Data are presented on the 9 crimes which accounted for 87 percent of cases sentenced to probation supervision. These include burglary/trespassing, theft/criminal possession of stolen property, larceny, criminal mischief, assault, robbery, weapons offenses, drug offenses, and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Findings indicate an increase of 92 percent in felony probationers and 42 percent in misdemeanor probationers, a rise of 188 percent in DWI offenders and 135 percent in drug offenders, a boost of 29 percent rise in probation sentences for crimes, and 68 percent rise in the number of probationers under supervision for such crimes. The report also provides demographic information on probationers, and statistics for New York City as well as the entire state. Tabular data.
