UTILIZING PUBLICLY AVAILABLE STATISTICS, THIS REPORT EXAMINES CURRENT CONDITIONS AND TRENDS IN THE SOCIAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, FAMILIAL, AND EDUCATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW YORK CITY CHILDREN, AND REPORTS ON SELECTED PROGRAMS.
Abstract
COMBINING NARRATIVE ANALYSIS WITH SUPPORTING STATISTICS, THIS REPORT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON SEVERAL INDICATORS OF THE STATE OF THE CHILD. THESE INCLUDE POPULATION LEVELS AND POPULATION MOVEMENT IN NEW YORK CITY; TRENDS IN FAMILY STRUCTURE, FAMILY COSTS, FAMILY INCOME, AND CHILD CARE; THE HEALTH OF NEW YORK CITY CHILDREN; AND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND EDUCATION. ALSO EXAMINED ARE TRENDS IN CHILDREN LIVING AWAY FROM HOME, FOSTER CARE, CHILDREN AS OFFENDERS AND VICTIMS, AND THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE SECOND SECTION OF THIS REPORT INCLUDES SUMMARIES, CRITIQUES, AND RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING FOUR PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN: THE CHILD HEALTH STATIONS, THE SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAM, THE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE SYSTEM, AND A PILOT BILINGUAL EDUCATION PROGRAM. A DISCUSSION OF BUDGET APPROPRIATIONS AND LIMITATIONS WITH RESPECT TO CHILDREN IS PROVIDED AS WELL....DMC
