REVIEW OF THE INSTITUTE'S EFFORTS FOR 1971 IN THE APPLICATION OF SCIENTIFIC AND ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES TO PROBLEMS OF URBAN LIFE.
Abstract
ONE CHAPTER DESCRIBES THE INSTITUTE'S WORK IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD. TWO SIGNIFICANT POLICE STUDIES INVOLVED IMPROVED PATROL PROCEDURES AND MINORITY RECRUITING. EFFORTS IN THE COURTS AREA CONCENTRATED ON IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF JUSTICE WHILE INCREASING PROCESSING EFFICIENCY. IN THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS, THE INSTITUTE WAS INVOLVED IN ANALYTICAL STUDIES. ONE STUDY DEALT WITH THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A COMPUTER-BASED INMATE INFORMATION SYSTEM. ANOTHER STUDY CONSIDERED THE COST AND BENEFITS OF APPLYING NEW TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES TO CORRECTIONAL OPERATIONS, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF SURVEILLANCE, INMATE SERVICES, AND INMATE AND OFFICER SAFETY.
