THIS PROFILE OF 1000 MALE PRISONERS SERVING SENTENCES OF TWELVE MONTHS OR MORE IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, WAS DESIGNED TO ASSIST IN THE PLANNING OF MORE EFFECTIVE INMATE MENTAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAM.
Abstract
AMONG THE MATTERS CONSIDERED IN THIS SURVEY ARE THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH THE MEN HAD GROWN UP, THEIR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, THEIR EMPLOYMENT SITUATION JUST PRIOR TO IMPRISONMENT, THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF PAST PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT, AND THEIR ABILITY TO MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS SINCE COMING TO PRISON. DATA WAS ALSO GATHERED ON THE PRISONERS' INTEREST IN DISCUSSING PERSONAL AND ADJUSTMENT PROBLEMS WITH QUALIFIED STAFF AND ON THE TYPE OF PRISONER MOST LIKELY TO SERIOUSLY CONTEMPLATE SUICIDE DURING HIS SENTENCE.
