Annotation
This report presents statistics on recorded crime in New South Wales for 1989-1990 and presents trends in major offense groups from 1982-1983 to 1988-1989 in terms of recorded offenses per 100,000 population and the percentage of recorded offenses cleared.
Abstract
The results indicate that there were significant increases in assault, sexual assault, receiving/goods in custody, malicious property damage, and fraud. Over the reporting period, there was an increase in the clearance rates of recorded assault offenses and decreases in the clearance rates of recorded non-dwelling breaking and entering and fraud offenses. The report notes that rates of recorded offenses are not identical with actual crime rates, so that perceived crime patterns do not always provide a reliable indication of underlying trends. Other confounding factors impact on the trends in crime clearance rates. Despite these limitations, the statistics provide information about crime and the effectiveness of government crime control measures. 31 tables, 20 figures, and 3 appendixes
