This report presents statistics and narrative summaries of the criminal cases handled by the local, district, and supreme courts of New South Wales, Australia, in 1999 and by the New South Wales children’s courts in 1998-99.
Abstract
The report does not cover minor criminal matters such as appeals against parking fines. The discussion notes that the number of criminal cases disposed by the New South Wales local courts increased by 13.3 percent from 117,053 cases in 1998 to 132,635 cases in 1999. The children’s courts handled 13,672 appearances, of which 10,277 resulted in at least 1 proven offense. The number of criminal matters brought before the children’s court decreased 12.8 percent between 1997-98 and 1998-99. A total of 3,492 cases were committed for trial or sentencing in the higher courts, a decrease of 7.3 percent from the total number of cases registered in 1998.
