This report presents statistics on the criminal cases disposed by the local, district, and supreme courts of New South Wales, Australia in 1992 and in juvenile courts in 1990-91 and 1991-92.
Abstract
The number of criminal cases disposed by local courts declined 4.3 percent, from 109,807 cases in 1991 to 105,118 in 1992. Convictions occurred in 87.7 percent of the cases in which person was charged, and 5.8 percent of these cases resulted in imprisonment. The proportion of relatively short prison sentences increased in 1992. The number of criminal matters disposed in New South Wales Children's Courts declined 13 percent from 15,802 cases in 1990-91 to 13,753 in 1991-92. The most common charge was breaking, entering, and stealing. Tables
