In October 1984, New Jersey's Administrative Office of the Courts began collecting data on delinquency cases handled by State family courts.
Abstract
Data are recorded on a Unit Case Form for each referral to court intake, and each form can contain up to three offenses. The form is completed at two different points in case processing. The first form contains demographic and charge data and is completed at the time of referral to court intake. The second form is coded upon case disposition and contains detention, attorney, adjudication, and disposition information. Forms are sent weekly to the Statistical Services Division of New Jersey's Administrative Office of the Courts where they are automated. Data files are sent to the National Juvenile Court Data Archive in Pittsburgh which creates case-level files from disposition-level files. The user's guide to these files explains how to access data according to such variables as county, race, sex, detention, adjudication, most serious offense, and disposition. Appendixes contain the unit case transactions form, an offense seriousness hierarchy listing, a disposition severity hierarchy listing, and the original data collector's statement of acceptance.
