BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR TREATMENT PROGRAMS IN NEW JERSEY STATE PRISONS AND YOUTH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
THERE ARE ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT SERVICES IN NEW JERSEY'S SEVEN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. IN THE ADULT MALE PRISONS, THESE SERVICES ARE TYPICALLY LIMITED TO GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING; HOWEVER, AT THE CLINTON INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN, FORMALIZED DRUG AND ALCOHOL TREATMENT PROGRAMS ARE OPERATING. THE DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMS IN THE THREE YOUTH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE SIMILAR IN THAT THEY ALL ARE MODIFIED THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY APPROACHES AND ALL ARE UNIT PROGRAMS (ALL PARTICIPANTS RESIDING IN THE SAME HOUSING UNIT). SPECIALIZED ALCOHOL TREATMENT PROGRAMS OPERATE AT TWO OF THE THREE YOUTH INSTITUTIONS. THERE ARE ALSO DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE FOR INMATES THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE. A SPECIALIZED PROGRAM HELPS INMATES MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM INCARCERATION TO PAROLE. SERVICES CONSIST OF IDENTIFYING AND DOCUMENTING THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF AN INMATE'S DRUG OR ALCOHOL ABUSE, IDENTIFYING AN APPROPRIATE COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAM IN THE GEOGRAPHIC AREA WHERE THE INMATE WILL BE PAROLED, AND OBTAINING ACCEPTANCE INTO SUCH A PROGRAM BEFORE RELEASE. THIS PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE FOR INMATES IN BOTH THE ADULT AND YOUTH INSTITUTIONS. THE ADULT INSTITUTIONS HAVE A BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROGRAM DESIGNED TO TEACH INMATES HOW TO ANALYZE AND MANAGE LIFE EXPERIENCES MORE SUCCESSFULLY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--RCB)
