Abstract
THE STATISTICAL SUPPLEMENT IS PART OF A NEW TWO-VOLUME FORMAT USED BY THE NEW JERSEY ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF THE COURTS IN ITS ANNUAL REPORT. THE SUPPLEMENT INCLUDES A DIGEST OF STATISTICAL DATA--NARRATIVE AND TABULAR SUMMARIES OF CASELOAD ACTIVITIES FOR 1977-78 AND COMPARISONS WITH PREVIOUS YEARS. THE DOCUMENT MAINLY CONSISTS OF DETAILED TABULAR DATA ON THE WORK OF THE STATE SUPREME COURT, THE COURT'S APPELLATE DIVISION, TRIAL COURTS (SUPERIOR AND COUNTY, JUVENILE AND DOMESTIC RELATIONS, COUNTY DISTRICT, AND MUNICIPAL), SUPREME COURT COMMITTEES, AND COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENTS. ALSO INCLUDED ARE DATA ON COURT OPERATING COSTS AND OTHER ASPECTS OF COURT ADMINISTRATION. THE DIGEST NOTES THAT TOTAL CASES ADDED TO NEW JERSEY COURT CALENDARS DURING THE REPORTING PERIOD REACHED AN ALL TIME HIGH OF 588,519. THE NUMBER OF CASES DISPOSED OF ALSO REACHED A RECORD LEVEL (577,472, AN INCREASE OF 6.7 PERCENT OVER 1976-77). THE INCREASE IN NUMBER OF DISPOSITIONS WAS DUE TO INCREASES IN BOTH THE NUMBER OF JUDGES AND THE NUMBER OF CASES DISPOSED OF BY EACH JUDGE. CASES PENDING AT THE END OF THE REPORTING PERIOD NUMBERED 179,028, ALSO AN ALL TIME HIGH FOR THE STATE. HOWEVER, THE GROWTH OF THE COURTS' BACKLOG DECREASED FROM 9.3 PERCENT FROM 1975-76 TO 1976-77, TO 6.6 PERCENT FOR 1976-77 TO 1977-78. (LKM)
