The comprehensive drug abuse treatment strategy of the Federal Bureau of Prisons calls for the development of a series of multitiered programs involving interventions of increasing intensity and duration, for dealing with drug-abusing inmates.
Abstract
The five levels of the strategy include a drug education program, drug abuse counseling services, residential comprehensive drug abuse programs, residential/research pilot drug abuse programs, and pre-release/community aftercare transitional services. This article describes the elements of these five program tiers. The development of both process and outcome evaluation procedures for the treatment interventions described here also require extensive planning. High quality interventions are necessary to instill credibility and accountability of program efforts. 24 references
