THE NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE POLICE AGENCY REPORTS ITS ACTIVITIES FOR CALENDAR YEAR 1978.
Abstract
THE REPORT INCLUDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE AGENCY'S OPERATIONS PLUS DETAILS OF TRAFFIC, DETECTIVE, AND COMMUNICATIONS ACTIVITIES. DURING JUNE 1978, THE AGENCY HAD TO DEAL WITH THREE MAJOR EVENTS: A NATIONAL CONFERENCE HOSTED BY THE GOVERNOR, AN ANNUAL 'MOTORCYCLE WEEKEND' IN THE STATE'S LAKES REGION, AND AN ANTINUCLEAR DEMONSTRATION AT SEABROOK. THE TRAFFIC BUREAU INSTITUTED A PROGRAM IN WHICH OFF-DUTY PERSONNEL WERE PAID TO PATROL HIGH-ACCIDENT AREAS ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. THE PROGRAM FOCUSED ON DRUNK DRIVERS. DRUNK-DRIVING ARRESTS INCREASED 14 PERCENT OVER 1977. ANOTHER TRAFFIC BUREAU PROGRAM INVOLVED THE ASSIGNMENT OF AUXILIARY PERSONNEL TO 'COURTESY PATROLS' DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. THE COURTESY PATROLS PROVIDED ASSISTANCE TO MOTORISTS, INCREASED VISIBILITY, AND RELEASED SWORN OFFICERS TO ENFORCE TRAFFIC LAWS. THE REPORT INCLUDES DETAILS OF THE INVESTIGATIVE SECTION'S CRIMINAL, POLYGRAPH, DRUG DIVERSION, AND FORENSIC WORK, PLUS SUMMARIES OF DATA-COLLECTION AND LICENSING ACTIVITIES. STEPS TAKEN TO AUTOMATE THE AGENCY'S COMMUNICATIONS CENTER ARE NOTED. STATISTICS ON TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT AND OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
