CITING THE OPINIONS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ACROSS THE NATION, THE AUTHOR REVIEWS SOME OF THE PRINCIPLE THEORIES ON THE RAPID INCREASES IN THE CRIME RATE AND SOME POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM.
Abstract
AMONG THE CAUSES OF INCREASED CRIME DISCUSSED IN THIS ARTICLE ARE PERMISSIVE ATTITUDES OF ADULTS, THE SLOW RESPONSES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, THE LOSS OF MORAL VALUES, LENIENT SENTENCING PATTERNS OF JUDGES, MORE LENIENT PAROLE POLICIES, PUBLIC APATHY, AND THE ECONOMIC RECESSION. PROPOSED SOLUTIONS INCLUDE IMPROVED REHABILITATION SERVICES, REMOVING THE REPEAT OFFENDER FROM THE STREETS, INCREASED COMMUNITY COOPERATION WITH THE POLICE, AND COMMUNITY ANTI-CRIME PROGRAMS.
