This article describes how a prison education officer created an education department in a new English prison.
Abstract
Aims and objectives for the education program at the category C prison for adult males are discussed, along with the specifics of course offerings. Full-time academic classes for 70 inmates were provided with evening classes three nights a week. Vocational courses included motor mechanics, light vehicle body repair, and industrial cleaning. Problems in selecting and orienting appropriate part-time teachers are identified. Successes in the program are also identified: an award-winning magazine produced by the prisoners, a rock band, and an art exhibition of work by inmates and staff. Courses are so popular that waiting lists exist. Plans for future educational development include establishing a prison-based, mini-business.
