UNDERTAKEN IN RESPONSE TO THE CAMPUS DISORDERS OF THE 60'S, THIS PROJECT SPONSORED TWO CONFERENCES BETWEEN DEANS, CAMPUS POLICE DIRECTORS, AND STUDENT LEADERS FROM 24 MAJOR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
Abstract
AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF THE PROGRAM WAS TO CONCEPTUALIZE THE STUDENT VIOLATOR OF CRIMINAL CODES AS A CULPABLE MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY RATHER THAN AS A PRIVILEGED WARD OF THE UNIVERSITY. IN THIS CONTEXT, LAW ENFORCEMENT ON THE CAMPUS WAS SEEN AS PART OF THE TOTAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE, PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE ASSUMPTION OF RESPONSIBLE ROLES IN THE LARGER SOCIETY. EVALUATIVE COMMENTS ON THE CONFERENCES BY THE CONFEREES, CONFERENCE PROGRAMS, AND WORKSHOP REPORTS ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
