This article describes the developmental history and services provided by the Georgia Public Safety Training Center opened in 1987 to consolidate training for law enforcement, corrections, fire, and court services in one facility.
Abstract
An overview of the planning and construction stages emphasizes that the facility was not just a new building, but was an innovative, comprehensive approach to training the State's public safety personnel. In particular, the consolidation facilitated cross-training. Funding, site selection, and design considerations are discussed. The six complexes of the completed facility are described in detail: an academic center with classrooms, laboratories, a conference center, and printing services; driver training which includes skid and tactical road courses; a corrections unit that includes mock prisons and jails and will use inmate labor in numerous operations; firefighters' facilities with a seven-story tower and a three-story burn building; a practical exercise area where mock situations can be simulated; and a firearms training complex with five ranges and a skills building. Maps and photographs.
