CASE STUDIES OF SIX JUVENILE HOMES, THE VARIABLES WHICH AFFECT COMMUNITY ACCEPTANCE OR REJECTION TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A FACILITY.
Abstract
THE DATA SUPPORTING THIS STUDY WERE GATHERED WITHIN THE MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH SERVICES, AS THIS STATE IS SEEN AS BEING IN THE FOREFRONT OF STATES SEEKING TO DISCOVER VIABLE COMMUNITY BASED ALTERNATIVES TO THE INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. OF THE HOMES THAT WERE EXAMINED, THREE WERE SUCCESSFUL AND THREE WERE NOT. THE SPONSORING AGENCY AND NAME OF PROGRAM, THE SELECTION OF COMMUNITY AND THE FACILITY SITE, AND CLIENT AND STAFF RESIDENCE WERE ALL LISTED AS ESSENTIAL VARIABLES IN THE ACCEPTANCE BY THE COMMUNITY, AS WERE THE STRATEGIES FOR ENTERING THE COMMUNITY AND THE PRESENTATION OF THE PROGRAM, ESPECIALLY WITH RESPECT TO SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. INCLUDED IS A TABLE COMPARING CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL GROUP HOMES.
