A COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM AIMED AT REDUCING PROPERTY CRIME AND FEAR OF CRIME IN FIVE HIGH-CRIME NEIGHBORHOODS OF ALBANY, N.Y., PRESENTS AN APPLICATION FOR LEAA FUNDING.
Abstract
THE ALBANY NEIGHBORHOOD ANTICRIME PROJECT FEATURES TWO CENTRALIZED SERVICE COMPONENTS AND FIVE LOCAL (NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION) COMPONENTS. THE NEIGHBORHOOD RESOURCE CENTER, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED TO ASSIST NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS, WILL PROVIDE CRIME PREVENTION TRAINING FOR RESIDENTS OF THE FIVE PARTICIPATING NEIGHBORHOODS, PUBLISH A NEWSLETTER TO KEEP RESIDENTS INFORMED OF CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES AND RESOURCES, AND ESTABLISH A SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING SUCH CRIME PREVENTION TOOLS AND SERVICES AS ENGRAVERS FOR MARKING PROPERTY AND LOCK INSTALLATION ASSISTANCE. PROJECT EQUINOX, A COMMUNITY HOTLINE/COUNSELING/YOUTH SERVICES PROGRAM, WILL CONTRIBUTE TWO FULL-TIME OUTREACH WORKERS TO THE ANTICRIME EFFORT. THE WORKERS WILL PROVIDE COUNSELING SERVICES TO NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTHS WHO EXHIBIT ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR, TRAIN NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTHS AS PEER COUNSELORS, AND PROVIDE SERVICES TO NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTHS REFERRED BY THE POLICE AND COURTS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION. EACH PARTICIPATING NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION WILL ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES TO COMBAT ITS PARTICULAR CRIME PROBLEM, SUCH AS ESCORT SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED, YOUTH ORGANIZATION ACTIVITIES, HOTLINES, AND BLOCK WATCH PROGRAMS. THE GRANT APPLICATION PROVIDES DETAILS OF THE ORGANIZATION, CAPACITY, AND PLANS OF THE OVERALL PROJECT AND OF EACH PROJECT COMPONENT. (LKM)
