Abstract
OF 254 STATE-OPERATED OR STATE-SUPPORTED INSTITUTIONS RECEIVING FUNDS UNDER TITLE I OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT IN FISCAL 1972, 33 WERE FOR NEGLECTED CHILDREN AND 221 WERE FOR DELINQUENT CHILDREN. SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRES WERE RETURNED BY 31 OF THE INSTITUTIONS FOR THE NEGLECTED AND BY 218 OF THOSE FOR THE DELINQUENT. FOR BOTH TYPES OF PROGRAMS, SUMMARY DATA ARE PRESENTED ON THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROGRAM, PROGRAM STAFF (NUMBER OF STAFF, EXPENDITURES, AND TRAINING), AND SERVICES (DIRECT EDUCATION, SUPPORT, AND OTHER SERVICES). DURING FISCAL 1972, RESPONDING INSTITUTIONS SPENT $16,130,001 IN TITLE I FUNDS AND SERVED 50,573 CHILDREN, OF WHOM 4,963 WERE NEGLECTED AND 45,610 WERE DELINQUENT. IN INSTITUTIONS FOR DELINQUENT CHILDREN, THE AVERAGE PER-PUPIL EXPENDITURE FOR SERVICES FOR THE YEAR WAS $319. SUMMARY TABLES INCLUDE DETAILED BREAKDOWNS OF PARTICIPATION AND EXPENDITURES FOR SPECIFIC SERVICES. SIXTEEN ADDITIONAL TABLES PRESENT BREAKDOWNS BY STATE. A COPY OF THE SURVEY FORM IS INCLUDED.
