This review of literature on the special concerns and needs of female prisoners emphasizes ways in which the Prison Department in Great Britain can help meet their needs.
Abstract
Few women are incarcerated, and few women's correctional facilities exist. As a result, women can find themselves incarcerated far from their homes, their families, and their lawyers which hinders their access to due process of law and their efforts to deal with personal problems such as child care. In addition, female prisoners often lack education and work-related skills. They may also suffer from mental or physical illness, deficits in social skills, and drug dependency. Obtaining help to find work, child care, and housing may make a considerable difference in the likelihood of avoiding further offending. Therefore, improvements are needed in the services provided to female inmates. 21 references
