POLICEMEN FROM METROPOLITAN NEW YORK WERE COMPARED WITH ADULT MALES AND COLLEGE MALES ON A PERSONALITY INVENTORY SCALE.
Abstract
CLUSTERS OF NEEDS REPRESENTING PERIPHERAL PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS OR TRAITS WERE IDENTIFIED, AND POLICE PERSONNEL WERE COMPARED TO THESE REFERENCE POPULATIONS IN TERMS OF THESE NEEDS. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT POLICE PERSONNEL ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE GENERAL ADULT MALE POPULATION IN THEIR HIGHER NEED FOR EXHIBITION AND HETEROSEXUALITY. THEY HAVE LOWER NEEDS FOR DEFERENCE, ORDER, AFFILIATION, ABASEMENT, NURTURANCE AND ENDURANCE AND ARE LIKE 'EVERY MAN' IN THEIR NEEDS FOR ACHIEVEMENT, AUTONOMY, INTRACEPTION, DOMINANCE AND AGGRESSION.
