SUMMARY OF DATA FROM QUESTIONNAIRES SUBMITTED BY 27 POLICE AGENCIES ON MATTERS RELATED TO POLICE POSSESSION AND USE OF FIREARMS, ON AND OFF DUTY.
Abstract
DATA INDICATED THAT DEPARTMENT REGULATIONS OF 63 PERCENT OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS REQUIRE POLICE TO CARRY FIREARMS WHILE OFF DUTY. TWENTY-TWO OUT OF TWENTY-SEVEN DEPARTMENTS REQUIRE OFFICERS TO BE ON DUTY 24 HOURS A DAY. ALL DEPARTMENTS REQUIRE POLICE REPORTS ORALLY AND IN WRITING FOLLOWING FIREARM USE, AND THESE INSTANCES ARE GENERALLY INVESTIGATED BY THE OFFICER'S IMMEDIATE OR COMMAND SUPERVISOR. THE REPORT CONTAINS A DESCRIPTION OF THE FUNCTIONING OF POLICE BOARDS OF INQUIRY, A DISCUSSION OF INSTANCES IN WHICH FIREARM USE IS PERMITTED, AND SPECIFIC DETAILS ON THE FIREARMS POLICIES OF EACH DEPARTMENT.
