SUMMARY OF A NATIONWIDE SURVEY OF JUVENILE DETENTION HOMES TO ASCERTAIN THE NEED FOR A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR DETENTION HOME PERSONNEL AND TO BEGIN DEVELOPMENT OF A DATA BANK ON DETENTION HOMES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
Abstract
THE MODEL USED IN THE SURVEY CONSISTED OF ASPECTS AND PHASES. ASPECTS INCLUDED PURPOSE, POPULATION, STAFF INFORMATION, OPERATING PROCEDURES, INMATE PROGRAMS, FACILITIES, BUDGET, AND STAFF TRAINING INFORMATION. PHASES INCLUDED EXISTING SITUATION, PLANNED SITUATION, PREDICTED FUTURE, AND IDEAL SITUATION. DATA WAS COLLECTED FOR ALL PHASES OF ALL ASPECTS EXCEPT PURPOSE AND POPULATION. DATA WAS COLLECTED BY EITHER QUESTIONNAIRE OR INTERVIEW FROM 174 OR APPROXIMATELY 60 PERCENT OF THE NATION'S DETENTION HOMES AND STORED ON COMPUTER TAPE. THE DATA COLLECTED IS USED TO DEVELOP PORTRAITS OF SEVERAL TYPES OF DETENTION HOMES IN THE US. AN OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT SITUATION AND PROBABLE FUTURE IS PRESENTED AND COMPARISONS OF HOMES DIFFERING IN BOTH CAPACITY AND GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION ARE MADE.
