Using New South Wales police agencies as a guide, this article outlines possible characteristics and specifications of an Australian national police car.
Abstract
These specifications include transportation of police service personnel, prisoners, and equipment; general duties in both metropolitan centers and urban areas; highway patrol/pursuit duties; plainclothes and surveillance/undercover duties; and administrative/welfare and executive functions. To accommodate the duties of police operating in Australia's varying terrains and climates, a national police car would have to be made available in a number of versions with different engine options. Several factors which would determine the practicality of a national police car include additional costs, extended vehicle retentions, restricted purchasing of vehicle makes and models, and reduced resale prices. In fact, the Police Pack-equipped Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore sedans, suitable for general, pursuit, and plainclothes duties, already constitute an acceptable national police car.
