This article summarizes the proceedings of the 2005 National Juvenile Corrections and Detention Administrators' Forum (held in San Francisco April 30-May 3, 2005), whose theme was "Total Health Care and Reduction of Violence."
Abstract
Eighty of the country's leading juvenile justice practitioners discussed total health care and violence issues as well as improvement for the juvenile justice system. One presentation presented the background and findings of the National Survey of Youth in Residential Placement, and another presentation described how to build a juvenile justice health care delivery system. A statistical description of juvenile detention and corrections in the United States was provided by a third presenter; and an update was given on the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Other presentations addressed the early identification of problems and strengths in the screening and assessment of mentally ill youth, as well as a plan for national collaboration in implementing "No Child Left Behind" in each State's juvenile justice educational system. Forty-five members of the National Juvenile Detention Association and the 35 members of the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators divided into small groups by region to discuss some of the recent challenges they have faced in their facilities.
