After describing the study and discussing study and sampling design as well as information processing, this codebook presents the variables and coding for a data set from the Bureau of Census' 1970 survey of all locally administered county and municipal jails with the authority to hold prisoners more than 48 hours.
Abstract
The major variables were jail population by client's legal status, age, and sex; type of prisoners received in the facility by age and sex; maximum sentence that could be served in the facility; employment data; and operating expenditures. Data are presented on a jail-by-jail basis. The appendix contains term definitions.
