PURPOSE AND STRUCTURE OF NILECJ ARE DESCRIBED ALONG WITH THOSE OF ITS PARENT ORGANIZATION, THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSISTANCE ADMINISTRATION.
Abstract
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE (NILECJ) HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ENCOURAGING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO IMPROVE AND STRENGTHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE INSTITUTE'S GOALS OF REDUCING CRIME AND IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF JUSTICE ARE BEING ADDRESSED THROUGH FOUR MAJOR PROGRAM AREAS ALLEVIATING CONDITIONS WHICH PROMOTE CRIME, INTERVENING IN CRIMINAL CAREERS, REDUCING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CRIME, AND INCREASING THE RISK IN CRIME. NILECJ'S LONG RANGE PLAN IS EXPLAINED AND DELINEATED WITH CHARTS, SPECIFICALLY ON THE PRIORITIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 1973. THE FOLLOWING SUPPORT ACTIVITIES THAT WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY THE INSTITUTE ARE DESCRIBED - EQUIPMENT SYSTEMS IMPROVEMENT, STATISTICAL INFORMATION, AND THE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROJECT. THE ROLE ON NILECJ IN LEAA'S HIGH IMPACT ANTI-CRIME PROGRAM IS INDICATED AS WELL AS ITS PARTICIPATION IN A NEW PROGRAM AIMED AT REDUCING THE SUPPLY OF NARCOTICS IN THIS COUNTRY THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE AFOREMENTIONED FOUR MAJOR PROGRAM AREAS. (SNI ABSTRACT)
