This document contains an update on research into controlling drug abuse and crime.
Abstract
The lead article reviews research by the National Institute of Justice that changes the perception of drug abuse and its relationships to crime. The article also describes promising options for attacking drug trafficking and suppressing demand for drugs by criminals. The article discusses cutting supply and reducing demand, forfeiture sanctions, drug detection through hair analysis and specific actions to deal with heroin sales in Lynn, Massachusetts. The document also contains articles or summaries of articles concerning new legislation supporting anti-drug abuse efforts; probing the links between drugs and crime; drug testing; Federal anti-drug efforts; juveniles, drugs and crime; law enforcement and prosecution strategies; and treatment programs.
