This report explains the procedures and presents statistics from the 1991 national survey on drug use and related attitudes of high school seniors, the 17th in an annual series that began in 1975, is conducted by the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, and is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Abstract
Each year, approximately 16,000 high school seniors are surveyed. In 1991, for the first time, a representative sample of approximately 18,000 eighth grade students in 162 private and public schools and 16,000 tenth grade students in 122 public and private schools were also surveyed. The survey covers the prevalence of drug use among high school seniors and trends in use. The survey covers 16 classes and subclasses of drugs, including alcohol, cigarettes, anabolic steroids, nonprescription stimulants, and illegal drugs. The questions also focus on the age of first use, trends in use at earlier grade levels, intensity of use, attitudes and beliefs concerning various types of drug use, and perceptions of relevant aspects of the social environment. Fifty-four percent of the seniors had used alcohol and 28.3 percent had used cigarettes in the past month.
