THIS THIRD IN A SERIES OF FIVE REPORTS FROM A NATIONAL CONSORTIUM PROJECT ATTEMPTS TO ESTIMATE HOW MANY PERSONS WITH ADVANCED DEGREES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE WILL BE NEEDED IN FUTURE DECADES AND WHICH SKILLS THEY SHOULD HAVE.
Abstract
THE SEVEN UNIVERSITIES INVOLVED IN THE 3-YEAR NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATIONAL CONSORTIUM COOPERATED IN SENDING A PRETESTED SURVEY FORM TO 2,881 INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND ITS TERRITORIES. RESPONSE RATE FOR THIS CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION MANPOWER SURVEY WAS 74 PERCENT. OF SCHOOLS RESPONDING, 41 PERCENT HAD A CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM, 4 PERCENT WERE PLANNING TO ADD SUCH A PROGRAM, AND 55 PERCENT REPORTED NO INTEREST IN SUCH A PROGRAM. IT IS CAUTIONED THAT THIS SURVEY REPRESENTS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE EMPLOYMENT POTENTIAL FOR PERSONS WITH ADVANCED CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREES. EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY, FOR INSTANCE, HAS FOUND THAT 54 PERCENT OF ITS MASTER'S LEVEL GRADUATES SECURE EMPLOYMENT IN OPERATING AGENCIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. HOWEVER, DUE TO THE LIMITATIONS OF THE SURVEY, PROJECTIONS ARE LIMITED TO THE ACADEMIC FIELD. TABLES SUMMARIZE FINDINGS, INCLUDING: PROJECTIONS OF NEW ASSOCIATE PROGRAMS IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS; PROJECTIONS OF NEW BACHELOR'S PROGRAMS IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS; PROJECTIONS OF NEW MASTER'S AND DOCTORAL PROGRAMS; COMPARISON OF PROJECTED CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREE PROGRAMS TO PRESENT PROGRAMS; FULL-TIME MASTER'S PROJECTED CRIMINAL JUSTICE MANPOWER NEEDS THROUGH 1980 BROKEN DOWN BY INSTITUTIONAL TYPE, TIME PERIOD, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE AREA; PART-TIME MASTER'S LEVEL NEEDS ALSO BROKEN DOWN BY INSTITUTIONAL TYPE, TIME PERIOD, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE AREA; PROJECTED MASTER'S NEEDS, NEW JOBS AND ATTRITION, 1975-1980; SIMILAR BREAKDOWN FOR DOCTORAL LEVEL GRADUATES; AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE NEEDS OF RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS. IT IS PROJECTED THAT 1,165 DOCTORAL LEVEL PERSONS WILL BE NEEDED BY 1980 IF BUDGET RESTRAINTS OPERATE, AND 2,088 IF THERE ARE NO BUDGET RESTRAINTS. THE FIGURES FOR MASTER'S LEVEL PERSONNEL ARE 4,132 AND 5,674. THERE APPEARS TO BE A MINIMUM NEED FOR 1,296 FULL-TIME MASTER'S DEGREE HOLDERS BY 1980 WITH A MINIMUM PART-TIME NEED OF AT LEAST 2,836.
